Newsletter- OSHC – Cordillera

January 25 to 26, 2022– The first batch of newly certified safety officers who attended the Free on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training Course for Safety Officer 1 (BOSH SO1) which the OSHC-Regional Extension Unit Cordillera Administrative Region (OSHC-REU CAR) conducted has been concluded.

BOSH SO1 comprised of eight-hour OSH orientation and a two-hour Training of Trainers on OSH. In addition, a module on the control and management of COVID-19 in the workplace and employees’ compensation program was included. These added modules are considered as special and timely, especially during this time of the pandemic.

BOSH SO1 aims to equip aspiring safety officers with the basic concepts and principles of occupational safety and health. Further, it helps the establishment be compliant with the provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards.

Moreover, the OSH law or RA 11058 otherwise known as, “An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof” and its Implementing Rules and Regulations (DO198-18) which took effect last January 25, 2019, requires a Safety Officer 1 for low-risk establishments.

Meanwhile, the first batch who successfully completed the training comes from the micro and small enterprises (MSEs) affected by the pandemic. During the open forum, they openly shared that there were many questions in their minds that a first-timer attending an on-line training via zoom platform commonly asks. Some of these are: why do I need this training and how to operate zoom? As the training went by, their questions were being answered and they became more comfortable using the said application.

After each day of the training, participants were asked to evaluate the resource speakers’ ability to share information. The following are some of their feedbacks:

  1. “Many can be a resource speaker, but only few can be an effective resource speaker.”;
  2. “The resource speakers are not only prepared but also knowledgeable on the topic.”; and
  3. “The source speakers are encouraging questions from the participants.”

Another Evaluation regarding the overall organization of the training was being conducted and here are some of their feedbacks:

  1. “The training materials were being compiled properly.”;
  2. “There was a smooth flow of the training from the first day to second day.”;
  3. “Facilitators were openly assisting the technical problems of the participants.”; and
  4. “A training where no one will be left behind.”
