Davao City- The Occupational Safety and Health-Regional Extension Unit 11 conducted a free webinar on Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) for Safety Officer 1 for the Micro, Small, to Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) last February 22-23, 2021. The BOSH for Safety Officer Level 1 was designed to impart knowledge and skills relevant to occupational safety and health to enable potential Safety Officers to implement their company’s OSH program. A total of 45 participants from different regions completed the course and now qualified as Safety Officer to practice in their respective fields. To properly welcome the participants, a warm message also was delivered by RD Ofelia B. Domingo, the Regional Director of the Department of Labor and Employment- XI.
The speakers came from the different Regional Extension Units of OSHC, imparting their knowledge on OSH selflessly to the participants. Moreover, two (2) guest speakers namely: Engr. Gerhard Anthony A. Gonzales and Engr. Espiritu Q. Magpatoc were invited to discuss and share their expertise on the field of OSH. On the first day of the training, the participants were able to learn the importance and the concepts of Occupational Safety and Health, and as well as the salient features of the OSH legislation. Industrial Hygiene and the Basic Safety Rules and Measures were also included in the lectures. Overall, the day 1 training is filled with learnings regarding the basic concepts and ideas behind Occupational Safety and Health.
During the second day, the training started with a lecture on Workplace Emergency Preparedness. A separate lecture on Hazards Identification, Risk Assessment, and Control (HIRAC) was also given to help the participants know the basics in conducting a HIRAC. Moreover, a workshop was organized to give the participants a first-hand experience on how to perform a HIRAC to give them an experience and a guide in creating one for their respective company. At the end of the group discussion and workshop, each group presented their HIRAC outputs. Aside from those topics, a special topic regarding the control and management of COVID-19 in the workplace was also included in the day 2 discussions, and a 2-hour Training of Trainers on OSH was tackled, to help the attendees to deliver their respective OSH programs effectively and with confidence to their work colleagues.
The program was eventually a success. And a warm closing remarks was given by the OSHC’s ever-supportive Executive Director, Engr. Noel C. Binag. Given the comprehensive topics, the speakers have profoundly explained their assigned lectures in a manner that the participants can easily comprehend. The program finally concluded with closing remarks from Ms. Analyn Escaro, RN of OSHC-REU 11. The participants fared well bringing with them new knowledge about Occupational Safety and Health allowing them to share with their colleagues; and as well as cognizance of the implementation of their companies’ OSH programs.
