A total of 287 new safety officers from 155 companies benefitted from five batches of the Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training for safety officers level 2 (SO2s) conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) in cooperation with the Occupational Safety and Health Networks (OSHNets) this March.
The BOSH Training is one of the 40-hour mandatory trainings for safety officer level 2 (SO2). Under the RA 11058 or “An Act Strengthening Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Standards and Providing Penalties for Violations Thereof”, a sufficient number of safety officers with the appropriate level must be employed by all companies depending of the level of risk and number of workers for every shift.
Workers may be designated as SOs after they are trained by DOLE or any DOLE-Accredited Training Organization and will then be tasked by the employer to implement an OSH program suited to the company they are working for. The SOs are now classified in four levels: SO1s are those who have completed the mandatory eight-hour OSH orientation course as prescribed in the OSH standards and a two-hour trainers’ training; SO2s are those who have completed the mandatory forty 40-hour OSH training course applicable to the industry as prescribed in the OSH standards; SO3s are those who have 48-hours advanced/specialized OSH Trainings in addition to the mandatory 40-hour OSH training course applicable to the industry and at least two years work experience in OSH; SO4s must have the mandatory40-hour OSH training course, 80 hours of advanced/ specialized Occupational Safety training course, and an aggregate of 320 hours of OSH related training or work experience.
