A total of 118 safety practitioners, OSH advocates, employers and employees participated in the webinar for the Construction Industry organized by the DOLEOSHC Regional Extension Unit XIII – CARAGA.

“Construction without a doubt is considered as high risk industry because workers are exposed to all kinds of hazards” said Occupational Safety and Health Center Executive Director Engr. Noel C. Binag.

DOLE 13 Regional Director Chona M. Mantilla, CESO III reported that DOLE CARAGA recorded a total of 9 fatal accidents last year.

“One life taken is one too many that is why it is important to observe proper safety and health guidelines. The observance of OSH is the way to a sustainable and healthier economy” she said.

Engr. Dennis C. Aquino, OIC of the Safety Control Division of OSHC, discussed the legal basis of OSH implementation on the construction industry. He enumerated the roles of employers and workers in the implementation of OSH in the workplace and elaborated the administrative requirements of DOLE on OSH.

Ms. Annie Tangpos, supervising labor enforcement officer and chief of Technical Services and Support Division of DOLE 13, discussed the Safety Seal Certification Program, a joint program between DOLE, DOH, DILG, DOT and DTI. This program aims to assure consumers and the public that establishments are compliant with the minimum public health standards set by the government. This certification is applicable to all private establishments, selected public places, and government offices.

Mr. Joseph G. Caputol, DOLE-accredited OSH practitioner in the construction industry shared the best practices of the Equi-Parco Construction Company in the implementation of OSH standards.

DOLE has recently reported that most of the displaced workers were from the construction industry.
