The Occupational Safety and Health Center Regional Extension Unit VI (OSHC-REUVI) assisted the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Environmental Management Bureau region VI in developing their guidelines on occupational safety and health pursuant to the CSC-DOH-DOLE Joint Memo Circular No. 1 series of 2020.

OSHC-REU VI Focal Person Melveen Melocoton gave lectures and workshops in the DENR-EMB RO6’s two day on-line seminar held on August 19-20, 2020. The activity was attended by various officers and employees of the agency.

During the workshop, the participants were able to identify safety and health issues in their workplaces. These include exposure to health risks such as Covid-19 infection of the agency’s skeletal workforce, especially those handling monitoring and enforcement

activities; safety risks during the conduct of water sampling, monitoring, and investigation of environmental complaints; and problems on office space.

The employees were also provided with coaching for the development of their agency’s OSH program and OSH committee that will serve as the policy making body on matters pertaining to safety and health. They were provided with the basic structure and duties and responsibilities of each member in the committee for their guidance. Detailed discussions were also conducted on the important elements of ensuring safe working conditions through programs on emergency preparedness and occupational health, support facilities, and reasonable working hours and breaks.

Melocoton also provided the employees with an organizational plan on activities that can help in the development of a comprehensive OSH program that will complement the guidelines in the OSH Standards for the public sector.
