“I am happy to be with you in this series of webinars. Ang ganda nga ng title, “MagOSHUP Tayo! – it is very fitting and appropriate, especially as we talk of all the initiatives being done for the safety and health of workers during this time of the pandemic. We are very grateful that the Center continues to provide all these advocacy and training activities needed. We really commend you for all of these. We would like to thank you for informing all stakeholders of all the DOLE and IATF strategies to address the COVID-19 pandemic,” said DOLE Assistant Secretary for Regional Operations, labor Standards, and Special Concerns Cluster.
Some 1,436 participants attended the two webinars while hundreds more watched via Facebook. The second episode of the MagOSH-UP Tayo! held on June 11, 2021 featured a discussion on the testing standards for personal protective equipment while the third episode held on June 25, 2021 featured lectures on Technical Safety Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Standards Investigation.
Engr. Ramon Fernando, engineer II of OSHC discussed the different tests done by the OSHC as the only PPE testing center in the Philippines to ensure that the PPEs are indeed capable of protecting workers from hazard exposure. The OSHC uses the standards from the American National Standards Institute for testing hard hats, eye and face protection devices, and personal fall arrest systems, while the Philippine National Standards are used for electrical rubber gloves and safety shoes. The OSHC issues certificates of the final test results which are valid for two years from the date of issuance. The list of PPEs which passed the test may be accessed via the OSHC website: www.oshc.dole.gov.ph
On the other hand, Engr. Melanie P. Banayos, PME, supervising labor employment officer from the DOLE Bureau of Working Conditions, discussed the legal basis, jurisdiction, coverage and the units inspected during a technical safety inspection (TSI) conducted by DOLE. She also shared the kinds of TSI, the procedure for conducting the TSI and how an Occupational Safety and Health Standards Investigation is being conducted.
The next MagOSH-UP Tayo! webinar will feature the Globally Harmonized System of Labelling and Classification of Chemicals and the salient provisions of the DOLE Department Order NO. 136-2014 on the implementation of the GHS in Philippine workplaces.
