“Work safety and health training is more important now as we continue to battle with the pandemic and the other hazards and risks in the workplace. Aside from preventing Covid-19 infection, we also need to ensure that workers are protected from risks inherent in job sites, especially in highly hazardous industries like construction,” said Occupational Safety and Health Center Executive Director Noel C. Binag, CE.
The OSHC and Western Visayas Occupational Safety and Health Network have trained a total of 119 new safety officers from 69 construction companies this February for free.
The COSH Training is the 40-hour mandatory training required for safety officers level 2 (SO2) in the construction industry. This on-line five-day training features lectures and workshops on OSH programming, policies and guidelines and its implementation and reinforcement; importance of safety and health; safety in construction site premises; excavation and demolition; roles of safety officers; toolbox meetings; job hazard analysis; accident investigation and OSH legislation; Employees Compensation Program; emergency preparedness; and prevention and control of Covid-19.
Under the DOLE Department Order 198 series of 2018 – the IRR of RA 11058 – a sufficient number of safety officers (SOs) with the appropriate level must be hired by all companies, including the small and micro enterprises, based on the risk level of the establishment and number of workers. Because the construction industry is classified as high risk, the minimum SO level required for companies in this industry is SO2.
